SARASOTA - The hot summer months are nearly here. For most of us, that means higher power bills while our A/C systems work overtime. But they don't have to.
A new house is going up on Sarasota's quaint Laurel Street. But this one is very different from the others. When it's done, it will be among the greenest homes in America. "It's going to have about 15% of normal houses energy costs. Only 15% of what it would otherwise be, which is phenomenal," says Andrew Tanner, Eco-Technologies President.
One component of that green process is foam insulation. It's sprayed onto the underside of the roof and immediately expands to 100-times its original size, and insulates the home from extreme temperatures. The insulation will reduce energy consumption and your power bill by up to 50%.
Another benefit: it seals the home from things like mold and allergens, creating a healthier indoor climate. And makes the house quieter too.
Most foam insulation products are petroleum based. Tanner's Eco-Insulate is different; It's green...based on Soybean Oil, a renewable resource.
But this isn't just for new construction. Tanner says about 30-40% of his business is upgrading existing homes. "The cost to install this product in retrofit construction is about $5,000 for a 2,000 square foot house."
